Friday 4th May 2012 - Andy Irvine

Andy Irvine

One of Ireland's finest - a true legend who 'never tires of the road', ANDY is a solo artist in the old style, a teller of stories and maker of music who continues to follow in the metaphorical footsteps of his hero Woody Guthrie as he travels the globe. His mandola and bouzouki playing is dazzlingly good and his pedigree is longer than an ol' freight train (Planxty, Paul Brady, De Dannan and currently Mozaic & Patrick Street). Andy's solo show features Irish traditional songs, ballads, tunes from Europe and America and many original songs in his own unique style. His latest album 'Abocurragh', produced by Donal Lunny, was a decade in the making but worth the wait in gold! Jump aboard and hitch a ride with a mesmerising performer.

Friday 11th May 2012 - Stuart Forester

Stuart Forester

STUART is a very fine singer, songwriter and instrumentalist (guitar & mountain dulcimer). His songs recount tales of gypsy funerals, fox hunting, North Sea trawler fishing, dustmen, skinheads, 16th century prostitutes, fairground workers, emigration, piracy on the Irish Sea and the odd protest rant for good measure. Stuart went travelling at a much earlier age than most - he was 6 months old when his parents camped round Canada for 3 years! He's toured with bands throughout the UK, Europe, USA, and the Far East and his experiences have inspired tales of hope, death, love, life, the city and the sea. His album 'Pennies for Gold' is stripped back, acoustic folk with eight original and two traditional songs.

Friday 18th May 2012 - Jenkins' Ear

Jenkins' Ear

The Magnificent Five from Guernsey return once more for another night of rampage, pillage and spillage. IAN PALMER, ROB McGHEE, PETE PURSLOW, STEVE LE TISSIER & DAVE JOLLY named the group after a pointless war with the Spanish over a severed ear, having met at sea in the days when press-ganging was still legal. And their songs are of the sea - well known and rousing shanties, songs from Cyril Tawney, newer ones like The Last Trawl, sad ones and some originals. This year they are celebrating 20 years together and can still be heard serenading at many a seafaring festival. With their rugged charm, handsome looks, fine harmonies and fearsome instruments, they really are rather good, especially when they've knocked back their spinach. Nautical but nice!

Friday 25th May 2012 - KAN

KAN

KAN is an instrumental band from Folk's top drawer. Irish flute player BRIAN FINNEGAN has oft played the club with FLOOK while AIDAN O'ROURKE is a fantastic fiddle player from Scotland's Isle of Seil and is well-known as front man of the mighty LAU. Guitarist & multi-instrumentalist IAN STEPHENSON is a member of the award-winning group 422 and also works with Kathryn Tickell. He is at the forefront of the new wave of rhythm accompanists with his own exciting bass/funk style of play. Percussionist JIM GOODWIN's other gig is with the Halle Orchestra! Together they create an enthralling, beautiful new sound based on the Irish & Scottish traditions and ground-breaking improvisation. They are not afraid to take risks in their desire to explore new sonic frontiers, with an intuitive ability to journey into the heart and soul of a melody old or new to take it somewhere fresh - and take their audience with them!
