Friday 1st February 2008 - Martin Carthy

Martin Carthy

MBE actually.... And deservedly so for all he's done for traditional English Folk Music over the last four decades. Martin is Folk's reluctant godfather and a storyteller supreme. His guitar style is quite simply 'Martin Carthy'- instantly recognisable and preserved on many classic recordings, both his own and by a 'Who's Who' of the Folk Scene. In The Beginning he gave his arrangement of Scarborough Fair to one Paul Simon! Since then he has been an enormously- influential figure in English folk music, in bands like Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey and Blue Murder and with others too many to mention. Martin has received a raft of BBC Folk Awards and is still as busy as ever. Still innovating after all these years...

Friday 8th February 2008 - Loz Netto, Nigel Bagge and Gus Hale

Loz Netto, Nigel Bagge and Gus Hale

LOZ did a gig for us a couple of years ago and brought along his mate NIGEL, who we then booked as well on the strength of that wonderful performance. Not known on the Folk scene as such, these two are master craftsmen on acoustic and electric guitars, with a pedigree as long as your arm in the Blues/R & B and quality Rock scenes (Ben E King, Angela Brown). What was even more amazing was that they had never actually done a gig together, and Nigel came along at the last minute to dep! Their empathy, dexterity, understanding and the quality of the material from the likes of Steely Dan, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt and of course the Blues, left us impressed! Tonight they bring GUS to add some percussion.

Friday 15th February 2008 - Jenkin's Ear

Jenkin's Ear

Rescheduled after our own IAN PALMER's unfortunate accident with a windlass last year (ok, a power saw), the offended part has now been reunited grudgingly with its owner and we're keeping our fingers crossed (not him - he can't) that this magnificent group of Men From Guernsey will make it this time (tides permitting) to drown our sorrows. Named after a pointless war with the Spanish over a severed ear, they met at sea in the days when press-ganging was still legal. The songs are of the sea - well known and rousing shanties, songs familiar from the singing of Cyril Tawney, newer ones like The Last Trawl, sad ones and a few originals. With fine harmonies, squeezebox, guitar and mandola, they really are rather good - and affordable! WARNING: May contain some strong language!

Friday 22nd February 2008 - Paul Millns

Paul Millns

PAUL started his career playing piano and keyboards for blues and soul bands - music which was to influence his own singing and composing. In the mid 60's he came to London, joining a succession of bands and touring the world with Alexis Korner, Eric Burdon, Dr Hook's Dennis Locorriere, Bert Jansch and Jo Ann Kelly. His own songs, influenced by heroes like Tim Hardin and R & B legends, have been covered by Elkie Brooks & Bonnie Tyler to name a few. He has also co-written songs with long time friend Benny Gallagher. Paul tours all over Europe with his band, so it's a treat to have him back showcasing his new CD, Undercover'.

Friday 29th February 2008 - Eddie Walker

Eddie Walker

Eddie has been guesting at folk clubs & festivals for the last 35 years, touring the length & breadth of UK as well as Europe, Hong Kong & New Zealand. Known for his dynamic style of acoustic guitar picking he covers a wide range of material, including old Country Blues in the style of Mississippi John Hurt, ragtime guitar a la Rev Gary Davis, Hillbilly, country & bluegrass from Jimmie Rodgers & Doc Watson & great contemporary folk songs from the likes of John Prine & Steve Goodman, (his favourite player). His live set includes songs such as 'City of New Orleans', the Irish classic 'Raglan Road', John Prine's 'Speed of the Sound of Loneliness' , 'Black & White Rag', and a fair smattering of his own fine songs in the Contemporary Folk style, such as 'Stolen My Heart Away' & 'On The Line'. A great entertainer who takes pleasure in delighting his audience.
