Friday 5th December 2014 - Hatful of Rain

Hatful of Rain

Lively, fresh and rootsy bluegrass, folk and old-time music will be delivered in typical Americana style by this four-piece band from Sussex. In addition to their sparkling playing and singing, their shows are a visual treat, too, as they perform around a single microphone, stepping forward to sing or take a solo, adding extra dynamism - and intricate teamwork. The quartet are Chloe Overton on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Phil Jones on double bass, banjo and vocals; James Shenton on fiddle; and Fred Gregory on guitar, mandolin and vocals. With songs ranging from the energetic to what Bob Harris has called the "hauntingly beautiful", an evening of dramatic contrasts is promised.

Friday 12th December 2014 - Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby

Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby

This sparkling and highly acclaimed transatlantic alliance of American singer-songwriter (Cathryn) and top British guitarist (Brian) always leaves audiences stimulated by their thought-provoking songs, so clearly performed from the heart. For example, from their newest alum, Real World, "Alice's Song" is a touching real-life tale and the percussive "Accanoe" evokes the spirit of native America. Brian, a former member of The Strawbs, plays effortlessly sumptuous guitar - and adds his dry wit to proceedings - while Cathryn sings with a precision and passion steeped in her roots in Richmond, Virginia.

Christmas Party, with Simon Mayor and Hilary James

A night for food, drink and festivities - and upon which anything might happen. Mulled wine and a table of savouries get the evening off to a bright beginning and to nurture the party mood, we have the extremely funny Simon Mayor, who also happens to be one of the world's greatest exponents of the mandolin, and the multi-talented Hilary James, who sings and plays the mighty mandobass. There will be laughs all round as Simon and Hilary display their virtuosity and engaging sense of humour.
