Friday 4th December 2009 - Jez Lowe

Jez Lowe

JEZ must surely be THE embodiment of The Living Tradition, with a back catalogue of stunningly-good, catchy, perceptive, pertinent, perturbing, perfectly-formed songs that vividly document the age we live in and the profound changes taking place - not least in his Geordie homeland where the industry and coal mines have gone but the characters and traditions live on and evolve. If there was a Musical Laureate Jez surely would be it, with his unerring ability to capture a theme along with a healthy dose of subversive humour and cynicism to keep the Establishment worried. Jez's songs permeate the Folk scene and are probably more-covered than anyone else's. In fact, many assume his songs to be traditional! And they keep coming - even the new ones sound like they've always been there. Jez travels the world to huge acclaim, and tonight he's all yours.

Friday 11th December 2009 - Joe Broughton & Kevin Dempsey

Joe Broughton & Kevin Dempsey

These two virtuosi of guitar and fiddle like to do their own thing occasionally, when they're not earning their crusts in Big Bands, jazz-rock, pop and soul gigs and the likes of Whippersnapper, Mary Black & The Albion Band. JOE has been playing since he was in the pram and has a PhD in circus skills and a mad banter that will leave you helpless. KEVIN has been around a bit longer and has played a few more notes. Effervescent, uplifting & life-enhancing, musically they're tighter than two coats of paint. Always a treat!

Friday 18th December 2009 - Christmas Party - Morag McLaren

Christmas Party - Morag McLaren

Join us tonight to celebrate Christmas, Hogmanay and a successful year in our new venue all rolled into one! Expect the usual Ram Club feast of plenty, culminating in a set by Scottish singer MORAG that will leave you stunned, entertained and ready for anything that Christmas and life in general can throw at you! After the usual Ram Regular spots, nibbles and mulled wine there will be a raffle and plenty of time to chat before Morag lights the blue touch paper on her unique show with a difference. An eclectic musical programme of songs woven together with anecdotal chat, Michael Nelson said of her show in New York: "From the minute she steps on to the stage, the audience know they are seeing someone special, a one of a kind comic genius who takes her audience on a journey which includes nuns, leather, Italians, opera history, a discourse on malt whiskey vs. vodka, comic characters and Scottish folk songs the beauty of which you've probably never heard". Morag's career has taken in the West End (Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera, A Little Night Music and currently Impropera), principal roles with Welsh National and Scottish Operas and her acclaimed solo shows throughout the UK, Europe and New York. Tonight Morag will be accompanied by NATHAN MARTIN on piano.

Tickets available in advance AT THE CLUB ONLY to members (details here), and on the night (check Home page to confirm availability before you travel).
