Friday 6th September 2013 - Mick Ryan & Paul Downes

Mick Ryan & Paul Downes

MICK is a very fine singer who writes just about the most articulate, clever, funny, sad, different songs you're likely to hear (like the hilarious and much-covered 'Widow's Moor'), many in a 'traditional' style with a modern edge. PAUL is an amazing maestro of the guitar and all things stringed, perhaps best known for his duo work with PHIL BEER & THE ARIZONA SMOKE REVIEW. Though never one to bask in the limelight he is a superb musician who can turn his fingers effortlessly to any style. He's a great singer too, and their set features songs from their recent CD on the Wildgoose label, 'When Every Song Was New'. Entertaining, slightly mad & with a strong audience rapport, these two embody the true essence of the Folk scene.

Friday 13th September 2013 - Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar

Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar

CIARAN (Fiddle, Bouzouki, Guitar, Vocals) met and joined forces with GREG (Vocals, Guitar, Bouzouki, English Concertina) in 2011. Both come from musical families and were regulars at folk festivals, clubs and sessions from early ages. Cia was a member of Celtic music band TRI as well as becoming an All-Ireland and All-Britain fiddle champion on several occasions, whilst Greg has supported acts such as Lau, Karine Polwart and Kerfuffle. Their backgrounds give them a wide range of influences, with a repertoire that comes from the Tradition, contemporary writers and themselves. They are amazingly talented and entertaining, with a range of material and instrumental prowess that belies their youth. With a hard-hitting sound combining strong songs, excellent vocals, and top notch musicianship, their performance brims with enthusiasm and is backed up by a real knack for banter and audience communication. In April 2012 they recorded their debut album "The Queen's Lover", released on the Fellside Records label to excellent reviews. Since then, their star has been very much in the ascendancy and they have won the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. This has led to a whole raft of major festival appearances this year, so catch them while we can still afford them!

Friday 20th September 2013 - Reg Meuross

Reg Meuross

Calling REG a singer-songwriter really doesn't do the man justice. He doesn't write lines of lyrics, he writes short stories then sets them to some of the most captivating melodies you'll ever hear. Reg's imaginative and finely crafted songs have earned him the title of Master Storyteller, and prompted Mike Harding to introduce him onto the stage of The Royal Albert Hall as "One of the finest singer-songwriters this country has produced". Reg's latest album LEAVES & FEATHERS was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios and captures the warmth and intimacy of his live performances. Reg is a Ram favourite, charming us with his gently-rocking, melodic, Folk and Country-tinged songs which are inspired by fragments of history and real lives as well as love and loss. So come and savour an evening of musical 'mists and mellow fruitfulness'.

Friday 27th September 2013 - Gordon Tyrrall

Gordon Tyrrall

GORDON is a brilliant and original guitarist and singer as well as a flute player par excellence. A familiar face at the Ram over our entire existence he has always flown under the radar, ploughing his own highly-individual yet always engaging path. Whether he's setting the poems of John Clare to music (and more recently the sonnets of Shakespeare), reinvigorating traditional English, Irish and Scottish songs or radically reviving more modern classics by the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Nina Simone, the songs always bear his unmistakeable stamp. He writes his own too, often with subjects 'outside the box'. Another of Gordon's passions is free climbing, and in music too he's prepared to stick his neck out and take risks with the arrangements to excellent effect. A more modest man you'll never meet who will welcome you warmly into his world.
