Friday 7th September 2012 - David Francey with Mark Westberg

David Francey with Mark Westberg

DAVID has become a major star in Canada and increasingly in most of the known world. A storyteller and singer who connects instantly with an audience, he came late to music and only discovered his talent for song writing after encouragement from his work mates! His songs - eloquent, subtle and powerful - tell honest stories of real people, places and situations, travels, trials and tribulations. He performs them with quiet, understated brilliance and a sincere, down-to-earth manner. In the last decade he has received 3 JUNO awards (Canada's GRAMMYS) in the 'Roots' category, and his new CD 'Late Edition' is a 2012 nominee. Tonight David will be accompanied by the superb Toronto-born guitarist MARK, so expect a very special evening.

Friday 14th September 2012 - Steve Tilston

Steve Tilston

A Ram favourite, STEVE is a peerless guitarist, songwriter & singer in the true English tradition. Currently riding high after a long-deserved BBC Folk Award for Best Song with 'The Reckoning' (from his new CD of the same name), he has been much in evidence on the airwaves and appeared on Jools Holland's TV show. Over the years classic songs have burst forth like a perpetual fountain, digging deep into folklore, historical events, modern-day dilemmas and characters and encapsulating them into vignettes of melodic wonder. Songs about beat-up old trawlers, statesmen, gold-diggers, outlaws, thinkers, drinkers, metaphorical banjos and naked highwaymen that linger in the memory and have been gratefully plundered by his peers and proteges. Slip Jigs and Reels, The Naked Highwayman and Here's To Tom Paine to name a few. Steve has recently turned his attention to the bankers and foresaw the meltdown with his song 'A Pretty Penny'. Check out this video of the song which says it all! http://youtu.be/JfUAqAlHSAs

Friday 21st September 2012 - Steve Ashley

Steve Ashley

Since the 70s, STEVE's career has been intricately woven into the fabric of English Folk and its Rock offshoots. In 1972 he was in the Albion Country Band with Ashley Hutchins, then released a solo album 'Stroll On', a masterpiece that was voted 'Contemporary Folk Album of the Year'. Steve then became the first (and possibly only) English Folkie to get a USA deal with Motown! His songs are exquisitely crafted, intelligent, catchy and much-covered and his albums feature the cream of British Folk and Rock musicians including Fairport, the Albions and Phil Beer. Sometimes it seems like he's disappeared, but with the re-release of his early back catalogue he's enjoying a new lease of performing life. Steve continues to write & release fine albums, most recently 'Time and Tide'. This album features stirring songs rich in poetry and strong in message & melody that engage with contemporary issues including the environment, war and peace.

Friday 28th September 2012 - Soiree

Soiree

SUE GRAVES, HECTOR GILCHRIST and STEVE POOLE are familiar faces at the Ram, doing regular spots in whatever combination of them happens to be there. The concept of SOIREE is indeed that - a getting together of friends to make music for pleasure. Melodic, inspiring, and generally of a positive bent, the songs come from the very best of contemporary writers & some originals, together with a sprinkling of jazz crooners, the odd tear-jerker and trad ballad and even some cheeky Rock n' Roll. Hector & Sue's voices combine in beautiful harmony, while picked and strummed acoustic guitars and harmonica underpin the melodies.
