Friday 6th May 2011 - Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies

Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies

When folklorists and sages of the future reflect on the folk music of today they will, no doubt, dust off JEZ's CDs, marvel at the quality, concur with the reviews, rave at the Radio Ballads and gawp at the sheer all-pervasiveness of his wonderful songs in the fabric of the folk scene, and rank him up there with the likes of Burns, MacColl and Dylan. And deservedly so. Jez's classic songs vividly encapsulate classic vignettes of North East life, and his great new album 'WOTCHEOR' is a fond nod to the people and the culture of North East England, presented in a 'radio cabaret' style in homage to the legendary 1950's BBC Radio show "Wot Cheor Geordie". Helped as ever by his supremely talented 'old money' acolytes KATE BRAMLEY (fiddle), ANDY MAY (pipes, accordion, piano) & DAVID de la HAYE (bass), this is not for the missing. Euros accepted.

Friday 13th May 2011 - Bob Wood

Bob Wood

One of the Ram's resident Scots, BOB is one of the finest acoustic fingerstyle guitarists around - "One of the best who is not doing it for a living", says BENNY GALLAGHER, with whom Bob has collaborated both live and on record and who will no doubt be present to join Bob on a number or three. Down the years he has quietly developed as a warm and engaging solo singer and performer, with an easy going sense of humour. His playing and song interpretations have been described as displaying rare sensitivity, lightness of touch and great technique. Bob's regular repertoire nowadays retains firm links with the tradition, but includes also a splendid array of more-contemporary songs. Expect therefore to hear material ranging from Robert Burns to Pete Morton; from Archie Fisher to Hank Williams; plus a smattering of pipe, harp and other tunes on guitar. Always an entertaining and convivial evening's entertainment.

Friday 20th May 2011 - Clive Gregson

Clive Gregson

One of the Crown Jewels of English songwriters and a guitarist to boot, in the 80s CLIVE fronted rock band ANY TROUBLE, then in the 90s formed a ground-breaking duo with CHRISTINE COLLISTER, toured regularly as part of RICHARD THOMPSON's band then with EDDIE READER and BOO HEWERDINE, and in 2005 with the NANCI GRIFFITH band. A songwriter with an acute ear for the minutae of life, his highly - original, catchy songs have been recorded far and wide. 2007 saw the long-awaited reunion of Any Trouble and a new album 'Life in Reverse'. Now based in Nashville, Clive is as busy as ever, writing, touring, collaborating (he has a new guitar trio with Andy Roberts & Mark Griffiths) and has a brand new album out, 'Bittersweet'.

Friday 27th May 2011 - Wizz Jones

Wizz Jones

A National Treasure, there are few artists with more claim to being a 'musician's musician' than WIZZ. Inspired by Big Bill Broonzy, Rambling Jack Elliot, Alexis Korner and Ewan MacColl, he learned his craft from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry in the coffee bars of London's Soho during the late fifties, took ROD STEWART on a busking trip through Europe (teaching him harmonica) and cited by John Renbourn and Eric Clapton as an important early influence. With his unique guitar style, eclectic repertoire and 'A right hand worthy of Broonzy', Wizz continues to tour the folk and blues circuits with all the old spark.
