Friday 1st April 2011 - Kieran Halpin & Jimmy Smith

Kieran Halpin & Jimmy Smith

With his high-octane songs, rocket-fuelled guitar and dry wit, Irishman KIERAN is a great live performer. He sings like he's living every song, firing them at you like cannonballs so the message hits home with unerring accuracy. Whether up-tempo or down-tempo, the songs are intelligent and strong, with subjects as diverse as the Berlin Wall and homesickness. Powerful and passionate, intimate and intense, he is impossible to ignore. All of this is underscored by an incisive wit in his introductions which helps an audience to understand where the song comes from and hint at where it might be going. In 2009 he released the album 'The Deal We Made With God', which includes 'So Long John', written for his friend the sadly missed John Wright.

Friday 8th April 2011 - Skyhook

Skyhook

Back by popular clamour, SKYHOOK are an exciting collaboration of three of the finest acoustic musicians in the UK. CATH JAMES (fiddle and viola) was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Tradition Award in 1995. Her playing - warm, driving and precise - has graced stages across Europe and America. MARTIN HARWOOD (fiddle, guitar and bouzouki) had the honour of playing for Nelson Mandela in 2000. EOIN TEATHER is an exquisite accompanist on guitar & bouzouki, and a singer-songwriter with a voice that silences rooms. He too has played with some of the biggest names in Irish traditional music. Skyhook have a gorgeous sound, with traditional tunes, driving dance music and spine-tingling songs from Scotland, Ireland & Cape Breton plus some sparkling originals, all performed with a breathtaking joy and precision that's hard to match.

Friday 15th April 2011 - Carrivick Sisters

Carrivick Sisters

Another fantastic act spotted on our travels last summer, twins LAURA and CHARLOTTE hail from Devon and have been playing music since they were in the pram! They first started performing as a duo in 2006, and in 2007 won a busking contest and a coveted spot at Glastonbury. After which they left school and turned professional! Whizzes on a guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro and fiddle (and the rest) they sing and harmonise wonderfully and perform with an expertise and maturity way beyond their tender years. Although their background is in bluegrass, their music has a strong folk influence which is evident in their original songs, many of which are inspired by their local landscape and stories. If you like Alison Krauss, who blended in a whole range of contemporary influences and moved Bluegrass into the mainstream, then you'll love the Carrivicks. "I am very impressed - one of the best young duos I've heard", said Ralph McTell.

Friday 22nd April 2011 - Mike & Ali Vass

Mike & Ali Vass

Hailing from Nairn, brother and sister, MIKE (fiddle, vocals) and ALI (piano, vocals) have been performing together for 10 years and are two of the best young exponents of Scots traditional music. With a varied mix of traditional and contemporary tunes, footstompin' jigs, reels, Strathspeys and some choice songs with close vocal harmonies, their performances burst with energy, drive, vitality, warmth and personality. Effortlessly swapping leads they display the kind of instinctive musical empathy often found among siblings, with inventive and exhilarating arrangements that take the music forwards. Check out the Ram's EweTube channel for some scintillating snippets from last time.

Friday 29th April 2011 - Jim Malcolm

Jim Malcolm

It's our pleasure to welcome JIM back for his second visit. One of Scotland's leading singers and songwriters in the traditional idiom. JIM has been frontman, guitarist & harmonica player with Old Blind Dogs, one of Scotland's best-known folk groups, since 1999. He also enjoys a successful solo career, with several acclaimed CDs including his latest, "Sparkling Flash". Jim's music embraces traditional and contemporary songs, classic covers and his own material. One of these, 'Neptune', was used in a TV documentary about the North Sea and has been widely covered since, resulting in an award for 'Songwriter of the Year' at the prestigious Scots Trad Music Awards. He knows his Burns too, so expect a few of them! "Jim Malcolm will just melt you in your seat", said The Scotsman. He will too, but don't worry about the mess - we'll sort that out.
