Friday 4th April 2008 - Brian Willoughby & Cathryn Craig

Brian Willoughby & Cathryn Craig

Continuing our mini Country-Folk season we welcome back two favourites of the club. BRIAN is simply an ace guitarist, be it sensitive, intricate acoustic or, with bands like The Strawbs, soaring electric lead. A more modest and unassuming chap you'll never meet who lets his guitar do the talking! Originally a 'house guitarist' on the Beatles' Apple Label, he has accompanied dozens of artists from Nanci Griffith to Monty Python, but in Cathryn he has found his match. And she's a pretty mean picker too, with a wonderfully-authentic Nashville voice that can lend itself to any mood and is right up there with the Shania Twains of this world. Always a great night with some top twanging, heavenly hollerin' and fine yarns in between.

Friday 11th April 2008 - Pete Coe

Pete Coe

A vibrant performer, who champions English Folk in all its glories - singer, songwriter, melodeon, banjo, dulcimer and bouzouki player, bandleader, broadcaster, teacher, step dancer, club organiser, sallow-faced wit, raconteur and all-round good guy, Pete is a 'one man folk industry' who represents the backbone of the folk revival. He's been a key member of numerous significant outfits across three decades, including the much-loved duo with his then wife Chris, the wondrous dance outfit New Victory Band, folk 'supergroup' Bandoggs and political trailblazers Red Shift. Yet he's probably best known for his richly varied solo work, stretching across the whole range of the folk umbrella from the English tradition to dance tunes to his own devastatingly potent original songs. His new CD 'Previous' is a long-awaited compilation from earlier vinyl releases.

Friday 18th April 2008 - Steve Ashley & Dik Cadbury

Steve Ashley & Dik Cadbury

Since his classic albums in the 70s, STEVE's career has been so intricately woven into the fabric of English Folk and its offshoots that sometimes it seems like he's disappeared. Sometimes he has but recently, with the re-release of his early back catalogue, he's back and enjoying a new lease of performing life so that a new generation of fans can appreciate his music. In 1972 he formed the Albion Country Band with the 'Other Ashley', then released a solo album 'Stroll On', a masterpiece that was voted Contemporary Album of the Year. Steve then became the first (and possibly only) English Folkie to get a USA deal with Motown! He has continued to release fine albums, most recently 'Time and Tide', featuring stirring songs that engage with the issues of 2007 including the environment, war and peace. Always rich in poetry and strong in message and melody, top artists clamour to cover his songs, and he has always had the pick of the English Folk-Rock elite at his disposal for recording and touring, like ace multi-instrumentalist DIK, (Steve Hackett, Decameron).

Friday 25th April 2008 - Roger Wilson

Roger Wilson

Once a graphic designer, ROGER became sick of the working life and has been busily working the Folk scene for a couple of decades now, lending his skills on fiddle and guitar to such luminaries as JOHN TAMS, The HOUSE BAND, KATE RUSBY, BILL JONES & MARTIN CARTHY. ...and he still finds time for a solo career and some fine solo CDs of his and others' songs. Needless to say, he has graced our stage quite a few times, both by himself and with others, and it's great to have him back again. Expect a mix of originals, covers, an amazing version of Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' and songs from his new CD 'You Look Familiar'.
