Friday 4th February 2011 - Megson

Megson

After combining their punk and classical backgrounds in 2004, STU and DEBBIE HANNA are now established young stars on the festival, club & New Acoustic scene. They create a truly original sound, writing great songs from the hauntingly-poignant to the brashly up-tempo, and reworking traditional songs - all with beautiful harmonies and exquisite guitar, mandola and whistle. Their last CD 'Take Yourself a Wife' garnered exceptional reviews across the board, and tonight they will be showcasing tracks from their 4th and latest CD 'The Longshot', a sublime collection of traditional and original songs on the theme of 'work'.

Friday 11th February 2011 - Alan Reid & Rob Van Sante

Alan Reid & Rob Van Sante

Newly 'retired', ALAN was a member of the original Celtic 'Supergroup' the BATTLEFIELD BAND since 1969! A band with a huge sound and a huge following, he was the 'Engine Room', introducing keyboards to great effect when no one else would dare, underpinning the pipes & fiddle and defining their unique sound. A gifted singer & writer, he provided many of their songs. ROB is an exceptional Dutch guitarist who has toured with a variety of Folk, Jazz & Rock acts. Also a great singer & writer, he has worked with Alan for many years. Tonight will bring together everything they've done in a wonderful, seamless fusion of old & new.

Friday 18th February 2011 - Grace Notes

Grace Notes

... are HELEN HOCKENHULL, MAGGIE BOYLE and LYNDA HARDCASTLE. All three are wonderful singers (Maggie has played the club numerous times with Steve Tilston and The Expatriate Game), with voices which are so very different in character yet so highly complementary. 'Harmony heaven', with a fabulous choice of mostly contemporary songs performed a cappella or embellished tastefully with keyboard and/or flute. Tonight they will be singing songs from their Fellside CDs including 'Northern Tide', which is full of choice material by the likes of the aforementioned Mr Tilston, Mike Silver, Richard Thompson, Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III and Bob Dylan. Angelic music to warm the cockles on a cold winter's night.

Friday 25th February 2011 - Elbow Jane

Elbow Jane

This band is brilliant! A five-piece from the Wirral comprising KEVIN BYRNE (guitar, keyboards, vocals), RICHARD WOODS (guitar, bouzouki, vocals), JOE TOPPING (guitar, mandolin, vocals, harmonica), CHRIS CHESTERS (bass guitar) & STEVE FINNEGAN (percussion), they are contemporary acoustic music at its best. By rights these young lads should be huge, like Mumford and Sons - and they probably will soon be if there is any justice in the world. They write and sing strong, highly catchy, melodic songs both thoughtful and upbeat, they harmonise wonderfully and their instrumental skills are top notch. They also throw in some choice covers in their own highly individual style and have a great line in banter. They'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry and they'll leave you wanting more. Take this one on trust from us - you will love them!
