Friday 2nd December 2011 - Kieran Goss

Kieran Goss

KIERAN is rightly recognised as one of Ireland's top contemporary songwriters and performers who is never off the radio back home. He's had hit singles and his songs have been covered far and wide (two were on Mary Black's 'Babes in the Wood' album). Born and raised in County Down, Northern Ireland he grew up in a big family listening to Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Sinatra and the Stones to name a few - artists that influenced his own unique sound. He has a huge fan base on the continent and here. Why? Because he writes the most beautifully-crafted, melodic, touching, uplifting, pertinent songs and performs them exquisitely. His latest album, 2009's 'I'll Be Seeing You' displays a remarkably-reflective maturity born of tragic, sad events in his personal life at the time. Songs of loss but ultimately of hope, his spirit shines through on every track. 'Live' he has that rare ability to connect to an audience and light up the room.

Friday 9th December 2011 - Chris Newman's 'Still Getting Away With It' trio

Chris Newman's 'Still Getting Away With It' trio

CHRIS is a truly astonishing guitarist - and mandolinist - across just about every genre. Way ahead of his time he has been at the forefront of the Digital revolution (of the fingers kind) for years - superfast, high resolution and broadband! A Ram regular with Irish harpist Maire Ni Chathasaig, Chris is taking to the road with some friends to celebrate 40 years in the biz, have some fun and showcase, in his own self-effacing, modest manner & with infectious energy and humour, all the styles he loves. Chris has 'got away with it' with some pretty ace players over the years - Django with Diz Disley & Stefan Grappelli, comedic virtuosity and a hit single with Fred Wedlock, Scottish with Boys of the Lough and more recently, touring and recording with Arty McGlynn and Nollaig Casey. He's never taken it too seriously and makes it all look so effortless but we assure you that you'll be both awestruck and entertained. His new CD is a tour de force of Hot Club jazz, haunting airs, jigs, reels, ragtime, blues, English, Scottish, Irish, African, Swedish, Latin, American. His mates are on top form too. ANDY WATT is a young and extremely talented guitarist, mandolinist & member of Tom McConville's Big Band. Bassist KEITH RAE from Edinburgh has performed with Tal Farlow, Jim Hall and Humphrey Lyttleton among many. Music to recharge batteries by!

Friday 16th December 2011 - Christmas party with Morag McLaren & Nathan Martin

Christmas party with Morag McLaren & Nathan Martin

We had MORAG for our Christmas bash a couple of years ago and are still recovering. Expect once again a Ram Club feast of plenty, culminating in a set that will leave you stunned, entertained and ready for anything that Christmas and life in general can throw at you! After the usual Ram Regular spots, nibbles and mulled wine there will be a raffle and plenty of time to chat before Morag lights the blue touch paper on her unique show with a difference. An eclectic musical programme of songs woven together with anecdotal chat, Michael Nelson said of her show in New York: "From the minute she steps on to the stage, the audience know they are seeing someone special, a one of a kind comic genius who takes her audience on a journey which includes nuns, leather, Italians, opera history, a discourse on malt whiskey vs. vodka, comic characters and Scottish folk songs the beauty of which you've probably never heard". Morag's career has taken in the West End (Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera, A Little Night Music and currently Impropera), principal roles with Welsh National and Scottish Operas and her acclaimed solo shows throughout the UK, Europe and New York. Tonight she is accompanied by NATHAN MARTIN on piano.
