Friday 2nd November 2007 - Doug Hudson

Doug Hudson

Doug is a nutter, and proud of it. For example, he is a die-hard Gillingham FC fan and the match day announcer - which is fine unless the referee is one who upset him previously with some dodgy decisions in a crucial game. So Doug makes a few jocular remarks over the PA and ends up as a splash in 'The Sun', a red card and fame of the wrong sort! He is a natural and very funny comedian, 'very big' with his one-man show on the ex-pat circuit in far-flung places, with such classics as 'The Wild Rover' in German, Pavarotti's Nissan Dormabile and his volcanic Football Commentary in Latin! He is also an excellent guitarist, songwriter and singer with a surprising ability to write the odd serious and moving song. Aural LSD for the masses.

Friday 9th November 2007 - Vin Garbutt

Vin Garbutt

Serene, calm and docile, the anaesthetic worked a treat during VIN's stay in hospital a couple of years ago. Thankfully it's worn off now and he's back to being whatever passes for normal for him. For those yet to be enlightened, Teeside-born VIN is a one man portable power station and much-loved National Treasure. With a unique guitar style and amazing tin whistling, he is one of the best live performers around, with an ability to spin hilarious yarns that are so untrue you actually believe them! And the songs (when he finally gets to them) stir, shake, tickle, enlighten, provoke, sadden and never fail to hit the spot. Subtitles available.

Friday 16th November 2007 - Boo Hewerdine

Boo Hewerdine

BOO's wonderful album 'A Live One' (still available) was born in this very club in 2001, using nothing more than a MiniDisc, and the angels of patience. Formerly front man of 80s Rock group THE BIBLE, it was Boo's first gig in years, having been busy as a producer with EDDI READER and THE CORRS. Afterwards he proclaimed himself "re-energised, a very happy man" and he's has toured and recorded ever since, with regular returns here. Great, melodic, thoughtful songs and some sublime guitar, Boo has recently released 'Harmonograph', a CD of his own versions of all those songs he's written for other artists.

Friday 23rd November 2007 - Chris Newman & Maire ni Chathasaigh

Chris Newman & Maire ni Chathasaigh

The brilliant, innovative harping of MAIRE (Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001), and the amazing virtuosity and versatility of English guitar wizard CHRIS, make a welcome return with their addictive and stylish cocktail of powerhouse Irish dance-music, gorgeous airs, evocative songs and striking new compositions - with shots of hot jazz and bluegrass thrown in! Their new CD FireWire has garnered extraordinary critical acclaim: "Dazzling virtuosity... The speed and complexity is to be marvelled at... exquisitely delivered... delightful" (The Daily Telegraph). They play the world over, with many an appearance on TV and Radio, but tonight they are all ours again, and we guarantee a unique and captivating evening.
