Friday 11th July 2014 - Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston

Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston

MIRANDA is an exceptional upright bass player who seems to be permanently 'on the road' these days with Show Of Hands. Luckily she still finds time to do her own thing, and tonight will showcase her lovely, crystal-clear singing, songwriting and guitar talents too. REX is a fantastic, young award-winning mandolin player whose fluid style and amazing ability to improvise accentuates the songs beautifully. In a few short years he has moved to the highest echelons of mandolining, with a style that encompasses tasteful accompaniment and breath-taking tune-playing. And he's a nifty guitarist too! Moving effortlessly between genres as diverse as folk, jazz and rock, their set features contemporary songs you'll know and love, their own material and plenty from their brilliant second album 'Sing a Full Song'. With lots of stories and chuckles too, it's always a treat!

Friday 18th July 2014 - Skyhook

Skyhook

Back by popular clamour, SKYHOOK are an exciting collaboration of three of the finest acoustic musicians in the UK. CATH JAMES (fiddle and viola) was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Tradition Award in 1995. Her playing - warm, driving and precise - has graced stages across Europe and America. MARTIN HARWOOD (fiddle, guitar and bouzouki) had the honour of playing for Nelson Mandela in 2000. EOIN TEATHER is an exquisite accompanist on guitar & bouzouki, and a singer-songwriter with a voice that silences rooms. He too has played with some of the biggest names in Irish traditional music. Skyhook have a gorgeous sound, with traditional tunes, driving dance music and spine-tingling songs from Scotland, Ireland & Cape Breton plus some sparkling originals, all performed with a breathtaking joy and precision that's hard to match.

Friday 25th July 2014 - Said the Maiden

Said the Maiden

HANNAH ELIZABETH, KATHY PILKINTON and JESS DISTILL are three very talented young maidens starting out on the Folk scene. Already making a splash, they make their music with infectious enthusiasm, bringing their own style and breathing new life into traditional songs. Their voices blend effortlessly in heavenly harmony, either unaccompanied or with tasteful accordion, ukulele, guitar, violin and flute. They have been blown away by the praise and encouragement they've received from the folk community so far, and in just one year have found themselves playing dozens of gigs around the country, from folk clubs and fundraisers to festivals. In recent months, Said The Maiden have played as support for some big names including The Fisherman's Friends and Dave Swarbrick! Young torch-bearers of the tradition, these ladies are going places!
