Friday 6th February 2009 - CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW:- Phil Beer & Miranda Sykes

CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW:- Phil Beer & Miranda Sykes

It's a delight to welcome back one of the folk scene's finest musicians and ambassadors. A dazzling player, PHIL is 50% of SHOW OF HANDS - arguably the most successful UK Folk duo ever - as well as being a top flight fiddler (playing in the all-star Feast of Fiddles) and virtuoso of acoustic, electric guitar, mandolin, mandocello, viola, cuatro, ukulele and probably some we don't know about! He's a great singer and interpreter too. Despite all this Phil still likes to keep his feet on the ground and play a smattering of small venues each year. After all, it's only a small step down from 2007's 3rd SOH sell out gig at Kensington Village Hall (aka the Royal Albert Hall)! Phil started performing in the 70s as a duo with PAUL DOWNES, spread his wings in the ARIZONA SMOKE REVUE, toured in MIKE OLDFIELD'S band and was in the ALBION BAND between 1984 and 1991 before SOH took off in 1991. He continues to do session work, most notably on the Rolling Stones 'Steel Wheels' album and has recently been working in an acoustic version of his lifelong heroes LITTLE FEAT as well finding time to produce albums for the likes of Jackie Oates. To cap it all, he has been nominated for Musician of the Year in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards! A living legend and all-round good guy!

STOP PRESS:- And, as an extra special treat, Phil will be joined tonight by ace of bass Miranda Sykes.

Friday 13th February 2009 - Tony Cox

Tony Cox

South African TONY gave us a stunning set back in 2002 (and in 2005 with compatriot STEVE NEWMAN). He is widely recognised as one of that country’s finest guitarists, winning many awards and becoming an icon of the instrument over there. An international performer, he developed his unique finger-style technique over the years by watching and absorbing from such greats as Leo Kottke and Bert Jansch and by playing with just about every ensemble possible. His music just tumbles out at you, a mosaic that incorporates all of the evocative and infectious multi-textured rhythms, startling percussive effects, delicate melodic patterns and varying styles of his homeland, along with classical, folk and other influences. A warm and engaging performer with many a tale to tell, you don't need to be a guitar buff to appreciate his amazing kaleidoscope of sounds as he takes you on a true musical safari - and the only inoculations you'll need are from the bar!

Friday 20th February 2009 - Reg Meuross

Reg Meuross

Throughout his career, guitarist and singer REG has played the role of musical straight man with fun outfits like the PANIC BROTHERS and HANK WANGFORD, but he has always had a parallel career as a major writer, performer and actor. His gently-rocking, melodic, country-tinged songs are never 'in your face' but seem to plant themselves in the mind. Reg has created his own form of 'Britannicana', finding inspiration in fragments of history and real lives as well as the usual subjects of love and loss. Live and on CD he keeps the finest company, with the likes of Who keyboardist RABBITT BUNDRICK, MIRANDA SYKES, PHIL BEER. His new CD Dragonfly consists of 15 songs written from stories collected on a recent tour of rural England. MIKE HARDING reckons the song 'And Jesus Wept' is "...one of the best songs I've ever heard about the first world war and particularly about the men who were shot at dawn."

Friday 27th February 2009 - John Kirkpatrick

John Kirkpatrick

A maestro of the button accordeon, melodeon and concertina, JOHN could squeeze a tune from a lemon if he had to! A champion of The English Style, John has gone on to become one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, performing solo, in duos, acoustic groups and electric bands as well as establishing an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso and session musician and leading interpreter of English folk music. He has been a member of the Albion Country Band, Magic Lantern, The Richard Thompson Band, Umps and Dumps, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey, Trans-Europe Diatonique, and Band of Hope, as well as numerous ceilidh bands. Of course, as we have seen oft times before, John is a brilliant solo act too! When not busting his bellows for us mere mortals, he's also busy putting in musical cameos on things like the Harry Potter films and theatrical productions. He's played here so often we'll be getting a blue plaque soon!
